Ever given up on a page while it was loading and switched to another app? Your visitors do the same. Speed is an invisible but essential part of the experience.

How does Google measure speed?

Google looks at page experience through three measurements called Core Web Vitals:

Metric Stands for In plain English
LCP Largest Contentful Paint How long until the main content appears?
INP Interaction to Next Paint How quickly does the page react when you tap something?
CLS Cumulative Layout Shift Does content jump around while the page loads?

You can check them for your own site with Google’s free PageSpeed Insights.

Six common reasons sites are slow

1. Huge, unoptimised images

A phone photo can be several megabytes. Images that aren’t resized and converted to modern formats (WebP, AVIF) are the most common culprit.

2. Too many plugins and heavy themes

Every plugin loads its own code and styles, and even unused features get downloaded to the visitor’s phone.

3. Third-party scripts

Chat bubbles, ads, tracking codes, social media embeds: each connects to another server and can hold the page up.

4. Weak hosting

A cheap, crowded server slows down even a well-built site.

5. Fonts

Loading many font weights, or hiding text until the font arrives, makes pages look empty.

6. Content without dimensions

When images have no width and height, content shifts down as they load. It’s annoying and hurts your CLS score.

Yagi Speed isn’t a one-off job. Measuring again whenever you add a new plugin or script is a good habit.

What we do

A few principles we follow, on this site too:

  • Images are added at the right size, in modern formats, with width and height set.
  • Heavy effects such as 3D scenes only load on capable devices, once the page is idle.
  • Fonts are self-hosted and never hide your text.
  • No unnecessary tracking scripts.
  • Animations switch off for visitors who turn on “reduce motion”.

A quick check

  1. Measure your site for mobile in PageSpeed Insights.
  2. Find your largest images and shrink them.
  3. Remove plugins and scripts you don’t use.
