Pricing & scope

Website pricing in 2026: what actually decides the price?

Why do quotes for the “same” business website differ so much? The seven things that really drive the price, and what to ask before you compare offers.

The honest answer to “how much does a website cost?” is: it depends on the scope. Three quotes for what sounds like the same project can be miles apart, and most of the time that’s because they describe different work, not because someone is overcharging. Here’s what actually moves the number.

The seven things that drive the price

1. Number of pages and structure

A one-page introduction and a five-page site with home, services, about, work and contact pages are different amounts of work. Every page means design, layout and mobile testing.

2. Template or custom design

A site built on an off-the-shelf theme is quicker and cheaper, but rarely feels like your brand. Custom design means colours, type, layout and small interactions shaped around your business, which takes more hours.

3. Languages

A second language isn’t just translated text. Menus, forms, emails, search settings and every page need to work and be checked in that language too.

4. Features

Contact forms, galleries, blogs and maps are fairly simple. Online booking, member accounts, payments or integrations with other software need a separate assessment, and they change the cost the most.

5. Whether your content is ready

If your text, logo and photos are ready, things move fast. If not, copywriting or image work becomes part of the scope. Saying so up front avoids surprise costs.

6. Will you update it yourself?

If you want to change prices, announcements or photos without emailing a developer each time, the site gets an admin panel. It costs a little more at the start and saves time later.

7. Revisions and support

How many rounds of changes are included? Who helps if something breaks after launch? When these aren’t written into the quote, they become the most common source of friction.

Yagi When comparing quotes, read the “what’s included” list before the total. If two quotes don’t describe the same work, comparing their prices tells you very little.

The yearly costs people forget

Building the site is a one-off cost, but some things renew every year:

  • Domain name (e.g. yourcompany.com)
  • Hosting: the server that keeps the site online
  • Business email: addresses like name@yourcompany.com
  • Maintenance: security updates, backups and small changes

Always ask whether these are included.

Five questions to ask before you choose

  1. Which pages and features are included, and which aren’t?
  2. How many revision rounds are there?
  3. Who prepares the content?
  4. Will I be able to update the site myself?
  5. Are tax, domain and hosting included in the price?
